A study released by the Commonwealth Fund has revealed many working-age Americans are not only going without health insurance, but also failing to seek care for injuries or illness because they can’t afford it. Legal & General expert responds to pension age change

Joseph Lu, Legal & General’s expert in longevity, has offered his analysis of Chancellor George Osborne’s decision in the Budget yesterday to examine the possibility of automatically linking the pensions age with life expectancy.

Lu explained that the projected increase in longevity would mean an extra 5 million people over the age of 65 in the next 20 years.

In the longer term, figures from the Office of National Statistics project an increase of people aged 65 or more from 17% today to 25% by 2052.

AXA identifies the Stop Start driver

A recent study from AXA suggests that there is a new sub-class of 1.5 million young drivers who are a potential hazard to themselves and others, when on the road.

Dubbed “Stop Start Drivers”, they are aged 17 to 29 and have passed their tests but rarely get behind the wheel.

When they do, they are more likely to cause an accident, (per hours spent on the road).

According to the research, nearly one in five driving licence holders in this age group drive only once or twice a month and only 45% are confident that they remember all, or most, of what they learnt for their tests.

When asked a series of questions about the Highway Code, 45% of Stop Starters wrongly identified the maximum speed limit on the motorway; 46% failed to identify a no waiting sign; 23% thought a no overtaking sign meant overtaking was allowed and 73% didn’t know what a zig-zag line on the road meant.

First Community Seeks 23% Florida Homeowners Insurance Rate Hike

A group of Florida homeowners could see a double-digit increase in their property premiums if regulators go along with their insurer’s rate request.

Florida regulators are holding a public hearing today to consider the First Community Insurance Co.’s request that it can raise its rates on dwelling and fire policies by a statewide average by 23.3 percent.

If approved, the rate changes would apply to new policies as of April 1 and renewal policies as of April 26.

Helphire appoints insurer relations manager

Helphire Group plc has announced that Paul Marlow has been appointed to the position of insurer relations manager.

Marlow previously worked for RBS Insurance, and there acquired over a decade of experience during which time he worked as an account executive and relationship manager.

In his new position with Helphire Group he will be directly responsible to Group Operations Director Susan Howe.

Howe warmly welcomed the appointment of Marlow, whose new post with the firm will see him take on responsibility for fostering the firm’s insurer relationships.
