Using a Job Fair to Find Employees
Job fairs are becoming more and more popular these days, and businesses are getting smarter about them. It used to be that organizations would only set up at job fairs if they were desperate to find employees. Now, companies are learning that one needs to use every avenue to find the best employees out there.

Job fairs are when companies set up booths or tables and open up to the public for browsing. They often are centered around a particular type of job, but they are sometimes general in nature as well. Regardless, the job fairs will bring in many people all with the same goal – to find a great job. What is great for employers is that you are already looking at go-getters as a rule if they are at a job fair. People that are proactive in their job search are usually wonderful candidates for employment.
To take advantage of this great pool of applicants, one must be prepared. To really get the most out of a job fair, you need to spend some time thinking of a creative way to attract them to your booth. This might mean a fun game, or a drawing or giveaway. Anything that will bring them to your booth is a good thing, because you can then speak with them more specifically.
Another key to succeeding at a job fair is to make a list of all the folks that visit your table. Make out a sign in sheet, and have them leave their name, address, phone number and email address. This will give you a list to call later if you do not land someone there on the spot to interview.
Make sure you bring along some literature to tell potential employees about your business. If you are unable to do this, then you will likely find yourself on the outside looking in. Many people come through these job fairs and you can not talk to everyone. You have to have literature to put in the hands of those people that you miss. Make sure that you put marketing information in every person’s hands that has your contact information on it. Ask them to feel free to contact you anytime for information and then follow through.
The key to a successful job fair is also about location. Call ahead early and reserve a good spot on the fair floor. You do not want to be stuck in the back corner away from the foot traffic. If you leave your location to chance, you can be sure that is where they will stick you. Call ahead and try to get as close to the front doors as possible. This will increase the visibility of your booth, and put your name in front of more faces as well.
If you prepare yourself, your business and your booth for the job fair properly, you will come away at the worst with a great list of qualified candidates to bring in and interview. The benefits of this are obvious, so head on out to your local job fair today. You and your business will be glad that you did.
