Woman linked to alleged staged-accident ring

A Durham, N.C., woman was charged with five counts of insurance fraud in connection with her alleged role in a staged-accident ring.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said Alesia Burnette, 45, allegedly participated in five different staged accidents, between May 2006 and April 2009. She allegedly filed claims to GMAC Insurance Co. for $7,200 in phony injuries sustained in the staged crashes, officials said.

Arrest warrants were issued for two other alleged participants, Randall Lee Bass and Nicholas Allen, who remained at large.

Burnette was being held in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Va. insurer gets Kansas state workers’ long-term care insurance deal

Genworth Life Insurance Co., part of Richmond, Va.-based Genworth Financial, will provide insurance for the Kansas State Employee Health Benefits Plan long-term care insurance program.

The program will be available to more than 49,000 employees, retirees and their families. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Two-thirds of people over age 65 will need long term care in their lifetimes, but most Americans have not proactively planned for this possibility,” said Buck Stinson, president of U.S. Ins

Even with reform’s savings, Md. health care system ‘unsustainable’

A council, formed by Maryland’s Democratic governor, Martin O’Malley, to anticipate and prepare for federal health reform in Maryland, predicts the state may save between $622 million and $1.04 billion by 2020 from the federal law.

Yet, even with the savings, the Maryland Health Care Reform Coordinating Council is warning that the health care system in Maryland could falter because of increasing costs.

“Our health care system will soon be unsustainable, regardless of these savings, unless we succeed in improving quality while reining in the runaway growth in costs,” said the report from the council, co-chaired by Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown and Maryland Health Secretary John M. Colmers
