Pennsylvania is U.S. leader in high-risk insurance pool enrollments
Pennsylvania has enrolled about 1,600 people in the high-risk health insurance pools, established with federal health reform earlier this year.
PA Fair Care’s enrollment is about one-fifth of the national total, according to federal figures.
The federal health reform law, passed in March, required states to establish high-risk insurance pools for people with pre-existing conditions, who could not obtain coverage.
U.S. Health and Human Service Department numbers indicate that enrollment has been lower than expected nationally.
PA Fair Care charges $283 a month and has an online enrollment form, making it easy for people to enroll, according to a state official quoted by WHYY.
PA Fair Care is still accepting applications, with funding available for another 2,000 people to enroll, according to a WHYY report.
