Public backing for longer learning period for drivers

0

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has called for a one year minimum period of learning to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries suffered and caused by younger drivers.

The proposal has the backing of three out of four people, according to new research commissioned by the ABI.

Director of General Insurance and Health Nick Starling has said that although a longer period of learning may prove frustrating for the drivers involved this is a price worth paying if they become better and safer drivers.

Ten young drivers/passengers are killed daily on British roads, with crashes being the leading accidental cause of death for males aged 15 to 19.

This August was National Road Victim Month, which sought to raise awareness about the 1.2 million people who die on the roads every year.

A third of the fatalities are suffered by drivers under 25.
